The robot is projected to make its grand entrance around mid-year, with mass production operations scheduled to commence in the July-August window of 2026. Tesla has confirmed that ongoing product testing is progressing in an orderly fashion, and the company is setting its sights on initiating external application trials in 2027. CEO Elon Musk has expressed a strong conviction that Optimus V3 is poised to become the most prolifically produced product in Tesla's history. This development is central to Musk's vision of transforming Tesla into a formidable robotics enterprise, potentially valued at $25 trillion, thereby significantly surpassing the current valuation contributions from its automotive sector.

Strategic Adjustments and Production Projections

The recently unveiled timeline signifies a notable adjustment from prior projections. During the fourth quarter of 2025 and subsequent full-year earnings call, Tesla had previously indicated that Optimus V3 was anticipated to be officially launched in the first quarter of 2026. Reinforcing the progress, an official communication from Tesla's Weibo account in early February of this year stated that the third-generation humanoid robot was nearing its public debut. The Optimus V3 represents a comprehensive upgrade based on the 2.5 prototype, with the most significant enhancements focusing on a newly engineered hand structure, designed to dramatically augment operational flexibility and precision.

Technological Innovations Driving Enhanced Capabilities

Engineered from the ground up based on first-principles thinking, the Optimus V3 boasts an impressive 37 joints, an increase of nine compared to its predecessor. It incorporates both harmonic and planetary drive systems, enabling a maximum walking speed of 1.2 meters per second. The robot demonstrates remarkable stability, capable of traversing slopes up to 15 degrees and rapidly recovering its balance. Its 22-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dexterous hand achieves sub-millimeter operational accuracy, empowering it to perform delicate grasping, manipulation, and assembly tasks with exceptional finesse. These advanced capabilities position Optimus V3 for deployment across a wide spectrum of industrial applications and potentially within domestic environments in the future.

Scaling Manufacturing Infrastructure for Future Demand

To ensure the capacity to meet anticipated large-scale production demands, Tesla has undertaken the significant step of reconfiguring its Fremont factory's Model S/X production line to facilitate humanoid robot manufacturing. Production is expected to commence by the end of 2026, with an ultimate planned annual capacity of one million units. Simultaneously, Tesla is actively developing a second production line at its Texas Gigafactory, which is designed for a long-term annual output capacity of up to 10 million units. According to Elon Musk, the new Optimus robot factory in Texas is slated for official operation starting in 2027.

The Evolutionary Path of Optimus

To date, Tesla has successfully introduced two prior iterations of its Optimus robot. The first generation (Gen1) was officially unveiled in October 2022, demonstrating foundational capabilities in walking and material handling. The Gen2, released in 2023, offered a 30% improvement in walking speed and was equipped with a 22-DOF dexterous hand, laying the groundwork for the sophisticated advancements expected with the Optimus V3.
