In a move reflecting a radical shift in the Syrian political landscape, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. This visit marks the culmination of an eventful year for President Sharaa, who led a rebellion that ousted former President Bashar al-Assad and is now seeking to end Syria's international isolation.
This marks the first visit of a Syrian president to the White House, following a previous meeting between the two leaders in Saudi Arabia six months ago. Discussions are expected to cover regional security issues, with the United States seeking to facilitate negotiations between Syria and Israel on a potential security agreement. U.S. proposals include deploying military forces at an airbase in Damascus and Syria joining the international coalition to combat the Islamic State (ISIS).
The visit comes amid U.S. efforts to ease sanctions on Syria, including the Caesar Act. President Sharaa aims to urge Congress to repeal these sanctions to attract global investment for the reconstruction of Syria, which needs over $200 billion according to World Bank estimates.
Syria faces significant internal challenges, including sectarian violence that has claimed thousands of lives since the fall of the Assad regime. President Sharaa himself has undergone a significant transformation, having previously joined al-Qaeda in Iraq before returning to Syria and leading a rebellion against Assad. His name was recently removed from the list of international terrorists, reflecting the significant changes taking place in Syria and the region.
Experts believe that Sharaa's visit to Washington represents a historic shift, with Syria transitioning from a country affiliated with Iran to part of the U.S.-led alliance. Despite ongoing challenges, this visit offers hope for a better future for Syria.
