Key Takeaways

  • Micron Technology shares closed at $1,015.80 on September 18, gaining 3.92% for the session and approximately 9.6% across two trading days.
  • MU stock is approaching the $1,041–$1,042 resistance area, which may act as the neckline of a developing inverse head-and-shoulders pattern.
  • A confirmed breakout could bring the record high of $1,255 back into focus, while failures below $900 and $804 would weaken the bullish structure.

Micron Stock Returns Above $1,000 as Chip Shares Rebound

Micron Technology shares returned above the psychologically important $1,000 level on September 18, strengthening the short-term outlook for one of the market’s leading artificial intelligence memory stocks. MU stock rose 3.92% to close at $1,015.80 after reaching an intraday high of $1,016.44. The move followed a 5.50% advance in the previous session, lifting the two-day gain to approximately 9.6%.

The rebound also represented a recovery of more than 12% from the September 14 intraday low of $902.60. Trading activity increased sharply during the latest advance. Approximately 35.8 million shares changed hands on September 18, compared with 22.1 million a day earlier. The combination of a higher closing price and expanding volume suggests stronger participation in the rebound, although it does not guarantee that the move will continue.

Micron’s gains came during a generally supportive session for technology shares. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.39%, while the broader information technology sector advanced about 2%. Strength in semiconductor and data-storage companies helped offset pressure from rising Treasury yields and oil prices near $100 per barrel.

Is an Inverse Head-and-Shoulders Pattern Forming in MU Stock?

Micron’s daily chart may be developing an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern, a formation that traders often interpret as a possible transition from a downtrend to a recovery phase. The July 17 low near $804 can be viewed as the left shoulder, while the deeper July 29 low near $738 may represent the head. Subsequent pullbacks held at higher levels, including the late-August low near $888 and the September 14 low above $902.

That sequence of a deep central low followed by a higher low supports the bullish interpretation. However, the formation is not confirmed while Micron remains below its potential neckline. The most immediate resistance is concentrated around $1,041–$1,042, where the stock reached highs on September 8 and September 9.

A decisive close above this zone, preferably accompanied by above-average volume, would provide stronger evidence that buyers have regained control. Without that breakout, the pattern remains provisional and the stock could continue consolidating below resistance.

Can Micron Stock Retest the $1,255 All-Time High?

The first upside test is the $1,041–$1,042 resistance area. A sustained breakout would expose the July 2 intraday high near $1,065, followed by the late-June trading zone between approximately $1,125 and $1,200. Beyond those levels, Micron’s record high of $1,255, reached on June 25, would become the main longer-term reference point.

A move from the September 18 close to $1,255 would represent an increase of roughly 24%. Reaching that level would likely require more than a technical breakout. Investors would also need continued evidence that AI-related memory demand, pricing and profit margins can support Micron’s elevated valuation and earnings expectations.

The company’s latest reported fundamentals provide an important backdrop. Fiscal third-quarter 2026 revenue reached a record $41.46 billion, compared with $23.86 billion in the previous quarter and $9.30 billion a year earlier. Micron also guided for fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $50 billion, plus or minus $1 billion, and an approximate gross margin of 86%.

Micron is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter results on September 30. That announcement is likely to be the next major catalyst for the stock. The market will focus on whether actual results meet the company’s unusually strong guidance, as well as management’s comments on high-bandwidth memory shipments, supply agreements, capital expenditure and demand into fiscal 2027.

Key Support Levels and Downside Risks for MU Stock

The first area of support sits around $1,000, which is both a round-number level and the site of the latest breakout. Below it, the $970–$978 region may provide secondary support because it contains recent closing levels and the 20-day moving average.

The more important medium-term support zone is approximately $888–$903. This region contains the August 24 and September 14 swing lows and forms the right side of the proposed inverse head-and-shoulders structure. A decisive break below $888 would damage the pattern and could shift attention toward the July 17 low near $804.

If $804 also fails, the July low around $738–$740 would become the next major downside reference. Such a move would invalidate the bullish reversal thesis and indicate that volatility in the memory-chip cycle remains a dominant risk.

Fundamental risks also remain significant. Memory pricing has historically been cyclical, and high current margins may encourage additional industry capacity. Weaker AI infrastructure spending, slower HBM qualification, customer concentration, execution problems or higher-than-expected capital expenditure could pressure sentiment. At the market level, Treasury yields near 5% may also weigh on richly valued technology shares by increasing discount rates.

Micron Stock Outlook Summary

Micron’s return above $1,000 has improved its near-term technical position, but the next move depends on whether the stock can clear the $1,041–$1,042 resistance zone. A high-volume breakout would confirm the recovery more convincingly and could open a path toward the $1,125–$1,200 region before any retest of the $1,255 record high. By contrast, a reversal below $900 would weaken the developing inverse head-and-shoulders structure, while a break under $804 would substantially undermine the bullish case. With fiscal fourth-quarter earnings due on September 30, both technical levels and Micron’s updated business outlook are likely to shape the next phase of MU stock volatility.
