Ethereum vs. Solana: A Financial Perspective and Crypto Analysis

Key Takeaways:

  • Comparative analysis of Ethereum and Solana, focusing on strengths and weaknesses.
  • Examination of Ethereum's decentralized structure and associated challenges.
  • Evaluation of Solana's efficient centralized model.
  • Comparison of developer cultures in both networks.
  • Insight into Wall Street institutions' perspective on Ethereum.

Let me start by clarifying that my institution and I hold both ETH and SOL. Therefore, our critiques of ETH aren't driven by a bias toward SOL. Ethereum's problems are chronic and won't disappear due to past hype.

Ethereum: An International NGO Federation

Ethereum is like an international NGO federation: bureaucratic, decentralized, and attentive to due process. Vitalik Buterin is like an emperor who lost his centralized power too early, making Layer 2 (L2) more like fiefdoms. The proportion of taxes these local fiefdoms pay to the center is very small. It's akin to the breakup of the Soviet Union or the Commonwealth of Nations after the collapse of the British Empire. Will Ethereum become like IBM? Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia are worth trillions, while IBM still struggles. It's a strong brand that exports technology and empowers others, but its business doesn't take a significant cut of the market. The tax-collection model is the strongest, as seen with Amazon.

Ethereum Developer Culture

The long-standing problem is that developers close to the foundation who can boast about their relationship with the foundation enjoy "legitimacy" and receive more attention from investors and the community. This sycophantic culture contradicts Ethereum's original principles. Additionally, some major Wall Street institutions mentioned in private conversations that they come to ETH because it's the first blockchain with a long history, reliability, and a strong brand. Another reason is that they want to launch permissioned chains, and ETH's technology has been verified in this regard over the years. This approach treats ETH like IBM. Wall Street institutions seem to share a similar mindset with Chinese financial institutions.

Solana: An Entrepreneurial Team Culture

In comparison, Solana is a typical example of an entrepreneurial team culture: centralized, efficient, and with strong execution. The business model is an integrated unit where one coin supports the entire system. The developer culture is like Burning Man: young, enthusiastic, and with a strong experimental spirit, closer to a university hacker culture. From a team and cultural perspective, I think Solana is more like a multinational tech startup team. In any case, everyone is making a joint effort to put global assets on the blockchain. Competition is good for all of us.
