Overview of Events

The political landscape is witnessing an interesting development as two prominent lawyers with backgrounds in cryptocurrency are planning to run for public office in New York and Massachusetts. Khurram Dara and John Deaton, both known for their advocacy in the crypto space, are entering electoral races that could potentially shift power dynamics in key positions.

Khurram Dara Seeks New York Attorney General Post

Khurram Dara, a former policy lawyer at cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, has officially launched his campaign for New York State Attorney General. In a Friday notice, Dara cited his “regulatory and policy experience, particularly in the crypto and fintech space” as reasons to challenge Attorney General Letitia James in 2026. Dara had previously hinted at plans to run for office, claiming James has engaged in “lawfare” against the crypto industry in New York.

Prior to July, Dara served as the regulatory and policy principal at Bain Capital Crypto, the digital asset arm of the investment company. According to his LinkedIn profile, he worked as Coinbase’s policy counsel from June 2022 to January 2023, having previously worked at crypto companies Fluidity and Airswap.

James, who assumed office in 2019, has faced criticism from some in the crypto industry for pursuing legal action against companies on behalf of affected New Yorkers, including Genesis, KuCoin, and NovaTech. The New York Attorney General holds significant discretion over whether to file charges against crypto companies operating in the state.

Dara, who intends to run as a Republican, also echoed themes from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s recent successful campaign, citing New Yorkers’ concerns about the rising cost of living and affordability.

John Deaton Runs for Massachusetts Senate Seat

As the deadline approached for candidates to announce their runs for various offices, former Massachusetts senatorial candidate John Deaton announced his intent to challenge a Democrat once again. Deaton previously ran against Senator Elizabeth Warren in 2024, losing by approximately 700,000 votes. On November 10th, he announced he would run again as a Republican, this time seeking to unseat Senator Ed Markey in 2026.

Deaton gained recognition within the crypto community for his advocacy on behalf of XRP holders during the SEC's lawsuit against Ripple. Similar to Dara, Deaton faces an uphill battle in a state that typically favors Democrats; the last Republican to win a US Senate seat in Massachusetts was in 2010. Both candidates are expected to face competition in their respective Republican primaries.

Implications for the Crypto Industry

These electoral bids raise pertinent questions about the future of cryptocurrency regulation. Would the election of lawyers with crypto expertise lead to a shift in regulatory approaches towards the industry? Only time will tell.
