Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is gearing up to launch a prediction markets platform, backed by a partnership with Kalshi. Leaked screenshots have provided a glimpse into the features and functionalities of this upcoming offering.
Jane Manchun Wong, a tech researcher renowned for uncovering in-development features on major tech websites, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that Coinbase is actively "working on a prediction market." Her post included several screenshots showcasing what appears to be the platform's user interface.
One screenshot indicates that the prediction market is being offered by Coinbase Financial Markets, Coinbase Global's derivatives arm, through the Kalshi prediction market. This suggests a close integration between the two platforms.
The other images depict a standard prediction market interface branded with the Coinbase logo, alongside an FAQ section and a user guide explaining the platform's functionalities and offerings.
Coinbase communicated to CNBC in July its plans to incorporate prediction markets as part of its ambition to create an "everything exchange." The partnership between Coinbase and Kalshi, formalized on November 13, designates Coinbase as the custodian for Kalshi's USDC-based event contracts. This move signals Coinbase's commitment to expanding its product offerings and capturing new market segments.
The platform is expected to support trading in both USDC and US dollars, focusing on events related to economics, sports, science, politics, and technology. The information released indicates a continuous addition of new markets, offering a dynamic and evolving trading environment.
Prediction markets have emerged as a prominent offering within the cryptocurrency space this year, witnessing substantial trading volumes on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket. This trend has prompted many of Coinbase's competitors to explore similar ventures, either through partnerships with existing platforms or by developing their own solutions.
Crypto.com recently introduced a prediction markets platform, slated for integration with Trump Media. Similarly, crypto exchange Gemini is planning to launch a prediction markets platform as part of a broader initiative to create a "super app," and has filed to become a designated contract market with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to offer the platform.
