Dubai’s stock market closed lower on Thursday, October 29, as investors assessed corporate results against a backdrop of unchanged UAE monetary policy.
The Dubai Financial Market General Index finished at 5,817.75, compared with 5,845.01 in the previous session. The decline followed Wednesday’s retreat from Tuesday’s close of 5,864.43.
Despite two consecutive losses, the benchmark remained above its October 23 close of 5,734.19. The recent movement therefore represents a partial reversal of earlier gains, rather than an uninterrupted weekly decline.
Thursday’s closing figures provide the reference point for the October 30 session. They do not describe Friday’s trading performance.
Individual stocks moved in different directions.
Emaar Development fell 2.11% to AED12.06, while Emaar Properties ended unchanged at AED11.48. Emirates NBD slipped approximately 0.07% to AED30.28.
TECOM moved against the broader market, gaining about 0.62% to AED3.23.
The divergence highlights the limits of reading company performance directly from the index. A declining benchmark can coincide with gains in selected shares, while a company’s earnings announcement may be assessed differently from wider market conditions.
The session’s price data alone do not establish a single cause for the market decline or prove that particular results drove individual share movements.
Regular-market trading value reached approximately AED574.2 million, compared with AED542.5 million on Wednesday.
Including direct deals, total turnover stood at approximately AED620.4 million.
Higher turnover alongside a falling index indicates greater trading activity, but it does not by itself identify investor motives. Assessing conviction would require a broader comparison of trading patterns, market breadth and activity across individual securities.
The UAE Central Bank held its Overnight Deposit Facility base rate at 3.9% on October 28, following the Federal Reserve’s decision to leave its Interest Rate on Reserve Balances unchanged.
The UAE’s short-term liquidity borrowing rate also remained 50 basis points above the base rate.
The decision maintained the immediate monetary-policy setting. It did not introduce a fresh reduction in the policy rate that might otherwise have changed expectations for financing costs.
For listed banks, interest rates interact with loan growth, deposit costs and credit quality. Property companies face a different combination of financing expenses, customer demand and project delivery requirements.
These relationships make the rate decision relevant to earnings expectations, although it should not be treated as a verified explanation for Thursday’s market decline.
TECOM’s latest results offered a company-specific view of Dubai’s business-property market.
The group reported nine-month revenue of AED2.349 billion, up 11% year-on-year, while recurring net profit increased 10% to AED1.221 billion. Combined commercial and industrial portfolio occupancy reached 97%.
Third-quarter revenue rose 12% to AED809 million, supported by a 35% increase in land-lease revenue.
The figures point to continued demand across the group’s portfolio. However, operating growth and share-price performance are separate measures: investors also assess valuation, financing requirements and expectations already reflected in the market price.
TECOM’s advance during a weaker index session illustrates why company disclosures and market-wide movements need to be considered together.
The next trading session will show whether Thursday’s weakness extends or buying interest returns.
Useful indicators include the participation of major banking and property shares, whether gains broaden beyond selected companies, and how trading activity compares with recent sessions.
Further earnings disclosures may also influence expectations, particularly where management provides information on margins, cash generation, asset quality or future investment.
Dubai’s October 29 session ended with a modest index decline and mixed company-level performance. With UAE policy rates unchanged and earnings season continuing, the market’s direction will depend on how investors weigh business results, valuations and the wider financial environment.
